Caner Arık, who works in the call center in Istanbul, came to his hometown Zonguldak for vacation on August 21. According to meteorology data, Arık, who went to the sea on the days when the humidity was highest, realized that he had a swelling in his head on August 23. The next day, Caner Arık went to ZBEÜ Health Application and Research Center, Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Abdullah Cüneyt Hocagil and many doctors examined him. As a result of the examination, it was concluded that the disease called ‘hot edema’, which is usually seen in the hands and feet, occurred on Arık’s scalp.
Arık, who did not respond to allergy treatment, was later sent home. Since the discomfort was not malignant, no treatment was applied. It was stated that the edema descending from Arik’s head to his face is expected to pass on its own. It was also decided to conduct a scientific study on Caner Arık’s illness, and necessary permissions were obtained in this direction.
‘WE DECIDED THAT THE SBLING IS HOT EDEMATED’
Pointing out that the highest humidity rate in Turkey was in Zonguldak on Tuesday, Dr. Abdullah Hocagil said, “Our patient went to the sea for 2 days in a row. After going to the sea, he had a hat on his head. While waiting in the sun and by the sea, he had an edema on his head. The patient came to us with the complaint of edema in his head. We investigated and we could not explain the patient’s clinic with anything else. “After excluding the causes of localized edema, we decided that the swelling on the forehead of the patient was ‘hot edema’. We started treatment for this.”
‘WE HAVEN’T ENCOUNTERED A CASE LIKE THIS BEFORE’
Explaining that hot edema is seen in the hands and feet in hot weather, Dr. Hocagil said, “In this patient, there was a serious edema on the scalp. We searched for it in the literature. We decided that it was a very rare condition. After the diagnosis of exclusion, we performed other tests and determined that there were no other causes, and we determined that edema occurred due to heat. We also received a positive response in our patient. , we will publish this case as skin edema on the scalp due to heat, which is rare in an international congress. We have not encountered such a case before. Edema, which is usually associated with heat emergencies, is something that is seen in the feet and hands. “This is an interesting case,” he said.
‘MANY DOCTORS ASKED QUESTIONS’
Stating that he often goes swimming, Caner Arık said, “When I looked in the mirror on Tuesday evening, I felt an edema in my head. I thought ‘it will be in the morning,’ but there was progress. As the day progressed further, I had to go to the emergency room. Many doctors came and asked questions. Edema may occur due to heat. “At the moment, it has regressed a bit. I hope it will get better in the coming days. It did not affect my life much in the first place, I was physically fine. I just had a feeling of fullness because there was a different situation in my head. As of yesterday, there was a situation such as exhaustion and loss of appetite,” he said.
