The United States has decided to extradite former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, who is accused of corruption. Toledo was sent to Barbadillo Prison in the capital, Lima, after he arrived in Peru under police surveillance.
FORMER HEADS OF STATE WILL SHARE THE SAME PRISON
Sentenced to 18 months of preventive imprisonment, Toledo will reportedly share the same prison where former Presidents Alberto Fujimori and Petro Castillo were also staying. Minister of Justice Jose Tello, in a statement to the press, stated that a procedure will be implemented by the Ministry of Justice for Toledo, and noted that the former president will be kept in Barbadillo after he undergoes the necessary health checks.

In its statement on February 22, the United States decided to extradite former Peruvian President Toledo, who was accused of corruption. Toledo is accused of taking bribes worth more than $30 million from Brazilian company Odebrecht. There is a lawsuit filed in Peru demanding 20 years in prison.
Former Peruvian President Toledo has lived in the United States since he left office in 2006. Toledo, who was detained by the US authorities in 2019 after his extradition was requested, continued under house arrest due to the Kovid-19 outbreak in 2020.

On April 28, 2017, 7 countries in Latin America requested Brazil to share information regarding the investigation of bribery paid to government officials by the construction firm Odebrecht.
Odebrecht had agreed to pay $3.5 billion in penalties in the United States, Brazil and Switzerland for the bribery systems he had established.
