James Cameron worked on Avatar for 15 years. When it came to the cinema in 2009, the blockbuster changed Hollywood effects cinema forever. However, this sci-fi milestone of all things could not be seen in the best possible picture quality in home cinema for years. That changes this week.
The most successful sci-fi film of all time will be released on July 13 for the first time as a 4K Blu-ray. So shortly after the home theater release of the sequel Avatar 2: The Way of Water * you can enjoy an Ultra HD version of James Cameron’s blockbuster.

Avatar – Departure for Pandora
James Cameron’s avatar is in one upscaled 4K version as a remaster on UHD Blu-ray.
That’s what James Cameron’s sci-fi film is about
The natural paradise of Pandora is inhabited by the Na’vi and is rich in the raw material unobtainium, which is valuable for humans. Since humans cannot exist in Pandora’s atmosphere, a scientific project was initiated to create genetically engineered hybrids of human and Na’vi DNA: the so-called avatars. This avatar is controlled by Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) by connecting his human brain and emotion receptors to the avatar body.
During Jake’s explorations of Pandora, he meets the Na’vi woman Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), who immediately fascinates him. Through them he gradually gets to know the life and culture of the Na’vis. But the more time Jake spends with the Na’vis, the more conflicted he becomes. He has to decide whose side he’s on – in a fight that will decide the fate of an entire world.
Avatar 2 couldn’t top the first part financially either
While Avatar didn’t exactly become a critic’s darling (reactions were overwhelmingly positive nonetheless), he did push on with his visual effects and 3D use standards. Financially, Avatar broke various records and climbed to number 1 in the highest grossing films of all time. A position he was able to defend against Avengers: Endgame thanks to re-releases. In contrast, Avatar 2: The Way of Water, which was released last winter, “only” made it to number 3.
The story of Jake and Neytiri is far from being told to the end. Avatar 3 will start in December 2025, Avatar 4 will follow in December 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031. It is questionable whether Cameron will actually stick to these theatrical releases.
