The actor Chris Hemsworth (40) has an absurd curse: he always has to wear a fluttering red cape. In an interview, he now explains how much the Australian hates capes: He was happy to escape the role of the thunder god and the red cape and play something completely different. But the cape even follows him into the new Mad Max film Furiosa.
What’s wrong with the man? The man has a hatred for capes. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Australian talks about his opinion on the garment. He just hates capes. They are so impractical.
After years as Thor, Hemsworth was happy to play a completely different role with Dementus in Furiosa. A grim villain in an SF world was a welcome change from the radiant hero of Norse mythology that he has now played in 9 Marvel films, from 2011 (Thor) to 2020 (Thor: Love and Thunder).
But the problem: the villain from Furiosa also wears a cape, and a red one at that.
“It was really something different, it was nice. I was going to say it was nice not wearing a cape for once… but I’m wearing a cape in the movie. And it’s red – or at least it’s going to be red. It’s so absurd!”
There is no escape from the Cape
This is what Hemsworth says about the new role: The character Dementus in Furiosa doesn’t have much in common with the thunder god Thor, as George Miller says.
“It’s not intended as a Thor comparison, but I found a wonderful outlet for it: playing the villain, transforming and taking on a completely different form was a lot of fun. I loved it. And that was the real appeal.”
This is what Hemsworth took on for the role: A very specific Roman look was important for the role of Dementus, for which the Australian had to spend a lot of time in the make-up.
Actress Anna-Taylor Joy jokes: It was one of the few times in her entire career that a male colleague sat in the makeup chair for as long as she did.
How much work went into the new Mad Mad film can also be seen in one detail: the team shot 15 minutes in the new Mad Max film for a full 78 days
