He ruined Europe’s last chance at the World Championship in LoL, now he’s back

The South Korean Kim “Doinb” Tae-sang (28) returns to League of Legends: He was the big obstacle that shattered Europe’s dreams of at least becoming world champion in LoL again in 2019. He destroyed the hopes of the then golden generation around Perkz, Jankos and Caps. And mercilessly.

This was the situation for G2 in 2019: 2019 was actually the year in which it would have been possible for Europe’s flagship team G2 to take the world championship title:

  • They had previously grabbed Fnatic’s best player, Caps, and the G2 players were in their prime
  • The Worlds took place in Europe, so it was a home game
  • The competition was somehow irrelevant: Faker had relatively weak teammates at T1, DAMWON Gaming around Showmaker was still too green behind the ears and couldn’t withstand the pressure – the Chinese were also suddenly defeatable in 2019
  • 2025 will be an exciting year for e-sports in LoL:

    Super carry destroyed Europe’s dreams

Then why didn’t it work? G2 went into the final against FunPlus Phoenix in Paris with a lot of confidence and suffered a terrible defeat. They lost 0-3.

Particular disgrace: FunPlus Phoenix’s ADC, Lwx, didn’t die once and then gave G2 a tough spell.

The central player of FunPlus Phoenix at the time was “Doinb”, who was known as “Super-Carry” and dominated the match with his creative style of play. He played with his brilliant jungle partner Tian and the two took turns deciding who did the kills and who prepared them.

There was no way around Doinb at the time.

Doinb took a 2-year break from professional LoL

He’s been gone for a long time now? Yes, Doinb actually ended his career in 2022 and became a streamer. He analyzed current events in League of Legends.

The South Korean, who has been playing and living in China for many years, has always flirted with returning. But after T1 demolished China at the last Worlds, he predicted: So much money would now flow out of the Chinese league LPL that he could hardly imagine returning.

But apparently Doinb has changed his mind again: After a 2-year break, the 2019 world champion will play LoL professionally in China again. He signed with the Ninjas in Pajamas team.

The Chinese league starts on January 12th, Doinb will play its first match on January 19th. But one can probably assume that there won’t be enough again in 2025 for such a dominant World Cup run as in 2019. But Europe is also miles away from the title today. The former golden generation of G2 is now semi-retired as a streamer: The heroes of Europe, Perkz and Jankos, are probably playing LoL together again because Riot is changing the rules
