“If you ever call me and ask me, [Lobo] to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”
Jason Momoa explained this in an interview in 2023. While he was still promoting his second Aquaman film, he was eyeing another DC role. A year later, his dream came true. In an Instagram post yesterday, Momoa confirmed:
They called.Jason Momoa plays Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Momoa isn’t getting his own Lobo movie (for now), but will play the eccentric bounty hunter in the upcoming adventure Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The comic film adaptation planned for 2026 belongs to the new DC Universe (DCU)which is created by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Momoa is moving directly from the ended DCEU, where he played Aquaman, to the reboot.

This is what is known about the Supergirl film:
Milly Alcock, who played the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, takes on the role of Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl.
Dwayne Johnson already wanted to play the alien bounty hunter
Lobo was created in 1983 by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, originally as a villain. In the ’90s, the alien made a comeback as a parody of Marvel’s Wolverine. The last resident of Czarnia (he killed everyone else for fun) has supernatural powers and works as a space bounty hunter, often on a motorcycle and accompanied by the alien bulldog Dawg.
Momoa is not the first Hollywood star to dream of a Lobo film. In the early 2010s, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was in talks for an adaptation for the cinema before declaring the project a failure in 2013. After that, Johnson turned his attention to another DC anti-hero: Black Adam.
More on the topic:
Lobo does not appear in the comic plot
The synopsis of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is based on a comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, is so far:
Kara travels across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Super Dog. On her way she meets a young woman named Ruthye and sets out on a journey murderous quest for revenge.
Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) plays Ruthye, while Matthias Schoenaerts (The Taste of Rust and Bone) has been cast as villain Krem. Bounty hunter Lobo does not appear in the comic story, but he was part of Tom King’s original pitch, as an article from Comic Book from early 2023 reveals.
According to King, the story should be similar to that of the Western True Grit, with Lobo in the role analogous to the seedy Western Rooster Cogburn and Supergirl as a young client on a path for revenge. It is not known whether the film will follow the original drafts. The presence of Ruthye, whose revenge story is told in the comic, makes it unlikely.
Superman: Legacy brings the new DC Universe to theaters on July 10, 2025, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows almost a year later on June 25, 2026.
