Editor Marina Ovsyannikova, who held an anti-war banner during the live broadcast on Russian state television Channel 1 after Russia’s attacks on Ukraine on February 24, was placed under house arrest. Ovsyannikova, who was brought before the judge on the grounds that she participated in an anti-war demonstration on 15 July, was brought to the courtroom in handcuffs under intense security measures. While the prosecutor demanded that Ovsyannikova be sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of spreading false information against the Russian army, the court decided to keep Ovsyannikova under house arrest until 9 October, not complying with the prosecutor’s request.
HAS BEEN FINED BEFORE
Ovsyannikova, standing in front of the cameras during the evening news on Russian state television Channel 1 on March 14, unfurled a banner reading “They are lying to you here, no to war”.
