Fatma Özyurt, who was diagnosed with a glomus tumor 4 months ago in Istanbul, applied to many hospitals. She started her search after the doctors at the hospitals she went to said, “Your jaw will be cut off, you will be left on the table, you may be paralyzed.” Cardiovascular Surgery Prof., who performed successful surgeries at Lokman Hekim Van Hospital on social media. Dr. Özyurt, who reached Halil Başel, listened to his inner voice and came to Van. Özyurt regained his health as a result of the successful surgery he had here.
Making a statement on the subject, Lokman Hekim Van Hospital Cardiovascular Surgery Prof. Dr. Halil Başel, Fatma Özyurt had a tumor located above her neck, which we call ‘Glomus vagale’. When I saw his films, we were not willing to have many surgeries at first. Because it is very difficult to surgically remove tumors located higher up, we generally recommend radiation therapy as the first choice. However, when we looked at the film, we saw that the tumor had grown approximately 2.5 centimeters between the film taken three months ago and the film we had taken.
The tumor, which was 4 centimeters when the first movies were shot in Istanbul, had reached 6.5 centimeters when we had it done here. Thereupon, we thought that radiation therapy would not be very effective in this patient. Because if we irradiated such a large mass, the patient could have serious side effects. During our examinations, we saw that we could reach the tumor. Normally, it can be reached by cutting the jawbone. Since their results are not good, we do not do it much. We noticed that the lower part of the tumor could be seen with the ultrasound we performed here. So we decided to have surgery. We successfully performed a very rare surgery here and brought our daughter back to health. “Thank God, no complications developed after the surgery,” he said.
“I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A LARGE GLOMUS VAGALE TUMOR REMOVED”
Pointing out that he has not seen such a large Glomus vagale tumor being removed in the literature, Başel said, “Radiation therapy is generally performed. But we were happy to release it, too. Because if our patient was 65-70 years old, maybe other treatments would be recommended and such risks would not be taken, but our patient is only 22 years old. “That’s why we were happy that the results were so good.”
“I LISTEN TO THE VOICE WITHIN ME”
Fatma Özyurt emphasized that she had been struggling with the disease for 4 months and said, “I went to many hospitals in Istanbul. They said that the tumor was very difficult, large, and that this was the first time they had encountered such a tumor. They said there was a risk of jaw fracture, oral entry, paralysis and death, but my gut feeling was always in favor of going to Van. Because I saw our teacher. He improved himself in this field and performed very successful surgeries. I communicated one-on-one with my patients. My heart was always in favor of this place. I came to Van by listening to my inner voice. I’m glad I came. “I feel very lucky,” he said.
