How should democracy be protected from undue influence – without sacrificing freedom of speech?
Tomas Tobé (M) gets it on, as parliament manager for the EU’s “democratic shield”.
Tobé becomes the principal responsible for what the European Parliament wants to see for measures to avoid similar events as in Romania, where the entire presidential election must be redone after unclear funded network campaigns behind one of the candidates.
The question is particularly hot considering how X-owner Elon Musk used his platform to support, for example, the external right AfD before the election in Germany on February 23.
Tobé does not want to silence Musk – but notes that X also has a responsibility for not spreading illegals.
– I think Europe should show a little more confidence and argue a little more for our own ideas than trying to find ways to censor Elon Musk. But then he has to bear responsibility for owning a platform that is under investigation, among other things, to spread Hamaspropaganda. He can’t be free from that, Tobé tells TT.
He will now seek a balance that can be supported by a majority in the European Parliament.
-We cannot have lawless freedom of expression, nor can we have total EU censorship. And in between you will find me somewhere, says Tobé.
