Hidden Mini-Cameo in the dark threat: This is how you discover Star Wars creator George Lucas

In the final of Star Wars: Episode I – The dark threat tries to recapture Queen Amidala to the Palace of Theed on her home planet Naboo. In one scene we see how she runs with her allies through a huge column course in the palace. If you have the film at an hour, 58 minutes and 17 seconds hung up, you can make an impressive archway in the background.

In the middle of the archway there is an oval portrait that modeled after a photo by George Lucas became. This mini-cameo not even noticed in the 4K revision that ran in the cinema last year. Fortunately, journalist Clayton Sandell has now spoken to Ilm veteran Caroleen “Jett” Green.

Jett Green is primarily known for her breathtaking matt paintings, which she made for Star Wars, among others. Matte paintings are painted backgrounds. In the past, these pictures were applied to glass, and these days they usually arise digitally. A matt painting was also used for the above scene.

In conversation with Sandell, Green reveals how the Lucas-Cameo came about:

I decided, a photo of George [Lucas] to take and attach it to this stone table. I thought: ‘Well, that will be cool. If you reduce the picture, his face is only blurred. ‘

When she showed Visual Effects Supervisor Scott Squires the modification of the matt painting, he said that Lucas had to give his blessing himself. Green remembers the following encounter:

George is very quiet. He looks at it and says: ‘Oh, how cheeky, how cheeky.’ I said: ‘Yes, but that’s you! It’s your face. ‘ And then it was quiet again. And I’m just sitting there with everyone. I can’t really describe the feeling, but for some reason I knew that I would not get trouble. And then George says: ‘Okay. Leave it in. ‘

In addition to this mini-cameo, Lucas had another appearance in the Prequel trilogy, which is somewhat easier to see. In Star Wars: Episode III – he briefly dropped the revenge of the Sith as Baron Papanoida in the opera scene on Coruscant. You can soon experience this cameo in the best possible way.

The end of the prequel trilogy comes back to the cinema for four days. The occasion is the 20th anniversary of the film. From April 24th to April 27, 2025 Mixes Star Wars: Episode III – the revenge of the Sith the current cinema program.
