As Russia’s attacks on Ukraine continue, world-famous British former football player and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham left the use of his Instagram account, which has more than 71 million followers, to a doctor working in a hospital in Kharkov, Ukraine. In his message on his Instagram account, David Beckham said, “I give my social media account to Irina, the director of the perinatal hospital in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. Irina helps the pregnant women there to have a healthy birth. We thank you for donating ventilators to the newborns in distress there. “In my stories you will find more information about Irina and the excellent work of healthcare workers to save lives. Please continue to support these people in any way you can and support organizations like UNICEF. Together we can make a difference.”
Sharing on Beckham’s Instagram account to draw attention to the consequences of the war in Ukraine and what happened, Doctor Irina Kondratova, Director of the Kharkov Perinatal Center, shared the images of the working conditions in the hospital. Kondratova posted the images from the hospital in the stories section of Beckham’s Instagram page. “On the first day of the war, pregnant women and mothers were evacuated to the basement. We spent a terrible 3 hours together. Unfortunately, we can’t take babies in intensive care to the basement as they need life-saving equipment. The first days were the hardest. We had to learn how to work with bombings and protests. This is my job and it goes on 24 hours. I’m here every day,” she said.
Mentioning that UNICEF has been providing medical supplies and oxygen generators to Ukraine for years, Kondratova said, “He helped provide oxygen to children who took shelter in the basement in Ukraine. We probably risk our lives, but we love our job. “The doctors and nurses here are worried, but none of us will give up.”
Former football player Beckham, who plays for the most prestigious football clubs in the world such as Manchester United and Real Madrid, supported UNICEF’s work for children while playing for Manchester United and became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2005.
