Queen Margrethe II of Denmark ended her New Year’s speech with a surprise. Queen Margrethe II, who has been on the throne for 52 years, announced that she left the throne to her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik.

Noting that the new owner of the throne will take over on January 14, the 52nd anniversary of his accession to the throne, 83-year-old Margrethe II said, “I decided that now is the right time. I will resign as Queen of Denmark on January 14, 2024. “I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” he said.
