As the Sheldon actor explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnny Galecki’s audition as Leonard blew him directly:
I spoke to other people, but it was very clear that there was no one else who made the role of his own, like Johnny. He knew what he was doing and he did it in a strong way. I had the feeling that he didn’t need my help. I didn’t have the feeling that he drives me into work. He was his very own thing.
For the book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series from 2022, Parsons continued how the first audition with Galecki felt (via Slash Film):
There was this immediate tensionand that was chemistry. In the second, when I read with Johnny, I knew, ‘This is him.’ It was not because he was a ‘good’ Leonard, or the way he read his lines, although that was certainly part of it, but it was just a feeling.
The rest is history. Parsons and Galecki were over 12 seasons side by side as roommates, work colleagues and best friends Sheldon and Leonard and are now one of the most famous ‘Odd Couples’ in series history.
