Netflix wants to create an entire sci-fi universe with Rebel Moon
Rebel Moon is about the peaceful residents of a… Moon, which the dark regime of the Empire wants to subjugate by force. The young Kora (Sofia Boutella) stands in the way of Admiral Noble’s (Ed Skrein) henchmen and searches the neighboring planets for potential comrades-in-arms.

Rebel Moon comes from the imagination of exceptional director Zack Snyder (300), who first proposed his idea to Disney as a Star Wars adventure. The company refused, but Netflix gave Snyder free pass for an entire sci-fi universe: According to his own words, Snyder is planning Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scar Maker and a third film (via The New York Times) a podcast, a comic, an animated series and a video game for the franchise (via Total Film). Is he taking on too much?
Whether Rebel Moon develops into a successful franchise depends largely on the streaming success of the first film. Netflix has Snyder on a $166 million budget (via Vanity Fair) granted a significant advance of trust, which is currently secured by a large advertising campaign and wants to be justified by massive numbers of views in 3 weeks. Not an easy task, even for one of the most famous blockbuster directors of our time.
When is Rebel Moon Part 1 coming to Netflix?
Whether the risk was worth it and whether Snyder’s franchise can continue to grow remains to be seen December 22, 2023 will emerge when Rebel Moon Part 1 appears on Netflix. Part 2 is scheduled for April 19, 2024.
