Spider-Man was a gigantic success and has grossed over 822 million US dollars, almost six times its production costs (via: The Numbers). Sam Raimi managed to score points with all age groups with his blockbuster mix of action, romantic comedy and sci-fi fantasy with horror elements. In addition, Spider-Man is endlessly quotable and has a top-class cast.
It’s no wonder that Hollywood then set out to repeat the success.
