You would think that Matrix lead actress Carrie-Anne Moss would have been a box office draw one year after the cult film’s release. But that wasn’t the case: Red Planet was a complete financial failure and is now almost forgotten. But you can now catch up on the exciting sci-fi film on TV.

The Earth has become almost uninhabitable and humanity wants to colonize Mars. For this purpose, terraforming algae were released onto the red planet 20 years ago to produce oxygen. But something is wrong with the values, which is why a team sent to Mars to check that everything is in order there.
However, the entry into orbit turns into a catastrophe and the small troop loses important resources. Commander Kate (Carrie-Anne Moss) stays on board the spaceship and tries to get it back in order. Meanwhile, the flight engineer (Val Kilmer) and co-pilot (Benjamin Bratt) fly with the shuttle and combat robot to the Surface of the planet, where a surprise awaits them.

Red Planet with Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss was a financial disaster
The Matrix was simply larger than life: The cult film’s success was so overwhelming that it is very likely that all the sci-fi films that came out shortly after simply went under. This applies to The 13th Floor and Mission to Mars, but surprisingly even to Red Planet, although the actress of one of the main characters in Matrix is involved.
The film failed miserably at the box office. While Matrix made 460 (!) dollars on a budget of only 63 million, Red Planet cost 80 million and only managed to recoup 33 (via: The Numbers). That is less than half the production costswhich probably doesn’t even include marketing.
