The noticeable Marvel fatigue has come to an end for the time being with Deadpool & Wolverine. The superhero blockbuster with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in their starring roles has already grossed over 1 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. An actor who appears briefly in the film, more or less by chance, has now once again very critical words about the genre.

Succession star Brian Cox criticizes superhero films

As our international sister site SensaCine reports, Brian Cox has now spoken again about superhero films à la Marvel and DC. The star, who was most recently known as Logan Roy in the HBO series Succession, spoke at the current Edinburgh International Film Festival about the negative effects of this type of blockbuster:

What has happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do. I think cinema is on a very bad path. I think it’s lost its place partly because of the big connection between Marvel, DC and all that. I think it’s actually starting to implode. You lose track.

Cox is also visibly disappointed by the wasted acting potential of stars like Reynolds and Jackman:

When you know that Hugh Jackman can do a little bit more, Ryan Reynolds… They follow that path and it’s a box office hit. They make a lot of money. That’s strangely unbeatable.

The Succession star knows what he’s talking about, because Brian Cox is no stranger to superhero cinema.

Brian Cox appears for about a second in Deadpool & Wolverine

In X-Men 2, the actor himself appeared in a supporting role as William Stryker His character was responsible for creating Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton.

In the Deadpool & Wolverine credits, which nostalgically string together outtakes from past 20th Century Studios superhero films, Cox can also be seen laughing briefly in his X-Men 2 role. But this doesn’t bring the star any financial benefit:

When these movies get made, a little bit of me always shows up and they never pay me.

In the US, Deadpool & Wolverine is now the most successful R-rated film of all time. The Marvel blockbuster has thus broken the previous record set by Joker with Joaquin Phoenix. It remains to be seen whether the sequel Joker 2: Folie à deux, which will be released in October, can follow suit.
