The company, which makes the drug Oxycontin, reached a settlement in May with a large number of state and local governments. It gives the Sackler family immunity from lawsuits linked to the American opioid crisis in exchange for the family paying $6 billion, equivalent to just over SEK 65 billion, in support of, among other things, addiction treatment.
HD will now test before the end of the year whether the settlement can be completed and whether the Sackler family should be protected.
Purdue Pharma filed for bankruptcy in 2019 after thousands of lawsuits and court proceedings have been going on for years.
Under the settlement, the Sackler family must relinquish ownership and control of Purdue Pharma. The company will then be restructured, change its name and focus on combating opioid addiction.
