Body horror guru David Cronenberg did not only have films like Videodrome and The Fly to offer in the 80s. With The Lovebirds he delivered a gruesome thriller in which Jeremy Irons played a Double role proved what he is capable of as an actor.

The Inseparables is about identical twins, who are similar in character extremely different twins Elliot and Beverly Mantle (both Irons). As gifted gynecologists, the brothers explore the boundaries of ethics in the medical field. In their private lives, they enter into a similarly questionable relationship with actress Claire Niveau (Geneviève Bujold), while she assumes she is only involved with one person. It will hardly be considered a spoiler if we tell you: things escalate in a cruel and tragic way. Just don’t expect any sprawling body horror orgies like in other Cronenberg films.

The melancholic and story told with striking images is based very loosely on the biography of the gynecologists Stewart and Cyril Marcus, who died simultaneously in 1975 under unclear circumstances. The biggest source of inspiration for the film is the book Twins by Bari Wood, which is about them and was initially published in Germany under the title Zwillinge and later also as Die Unzertrennlichen.

The series twin to the 1988 film is the 2023 Amazon series developed by Alice Birch. six-part adaptation follows the same premise and doesn’t even change the twins’ names Elliot and Beverly, only that they are now played by Weisz. The love interest from the acting world is played by Britne Oldford, whose series character is also called Genevieve in reference to the original actress.
