A Sarnia man banned from weapons allegedly claimed the hatchets, knife, BB gun and ammo he was caught carrying Monday morning were woodworking tools, according to police.
David Grego, 25, was released a few hours later on a $500 bail plan without the alleged tools and a stern reminder he’s barred from all types of weapons, but specifically BB guns and edged weapons.
A suspect, ordered to abstain from weapons while facing an assault charge laid earlier this year, was wanted on a bench warrant for allegedly failing to attend court last week. The suspect was arrested and searched Monday morning, Sarnia police said in a Tweet posted around 8:30 am
“Male with a warrant for his arrest and a court-imposed weapons prohibition out for a Monday morning stroll with his ‘Woodworking Tools.’ Arrested and held for bail,” the Tweet said.
It included a photo of the alleged weapons displayed on the hood of a Sarnia police cruiser: two hatchets, a knife, a BB handgun and ammunition.
Chief Derek Davis took to Twitter to praise his officers.
“Excellent proactive work by @SarniaPolice patrol officers this morning,” he Tweeted Monday afternoon.
Police did not identify the suspect on social media who they said was held for a bail hearing.
But court records show Grego, a 25-year-old Sarnia man who has a court-ordered weapons ban in place, was arrested Monday amid a new charge of failing to comply with a release order by allegedly having weapons. Grego was released Monday afternoon on his own recognition, but with supervision by the local chapter of the John Howard Society.
He can’t have any weapons, with pellet guns and edged weapons specifically listed by the judge, or contact the complainant linked to the charge from earlier this year. Grego didn’t have to pay any money upfront, but could be on the hook for the $500 if he’s caught breaking any of the rules of his release.
He was ordered to report to the John Howard Society Tuesday morning and will return to court later this summer.
Sarnia police identified Grego in an official press release issued Monday afternoon. The full list of charges from earlier this year include assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death, and failing to comply with a release order by possession of a weapon, according to the release.
