The pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo during the round of 16 in the European Championship surprised everyone.
Now Hasse Backe is raging.
– I have never seen anything like it, says the TV4 expert.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been chasing the first EC goal of the year throughout the tournament, and in yesterday’s round of 16 against Slovenia, there was certainly no shortage of chances. Ronaldo absolutely peppered Jan Oblak’s finish in the Slovenia goal, but after 90 minutes it was still 0-0, and an increasingly frustrated Ronaldo.
In tears after the loss
Early in the first half of extra time, however, the attacking star got a great chance, when Diego Jota was brought down in the offensive penalty area. Ronaldo, known as one of the world’s best penalty shooters, was however outwitted by Oblak who made a superb save. And the penalty miss took a toll on Ronaldo.
When Portugal gathered at their substitutes’ bench when half of extra time had been played, Ronaldo was forced to be comforted by teammates as he burst into tears over his miss. In the end, it was advancement for Portugal anyway, when they won the penalty shootout with a clear 3-0 – among other things after a goal by Cristiano Ronaldo, but above all after a great play by the goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Backe’s great criticism
Afterwards, TV4’s experts Mikael Lustig and Hasse Backe were almost in shock at Ronaldo’s behavior, especially when the match was de facto still going on, and when the captain’s possible references were completely overshadowed by Ronaldo.
– Of course I knew that he was a big egoist and a big narcissist, but that it was at this level, I didn’t think so, says Lustig in TV4’s EC studio.
Hasse Backe, former head coach and now expert on the TV channel, agreed:
– The whole gang has to try to comfort Ronaldo’s mega-ego. I’ve never seen anything like it in any big star in any sport.
