The state’s efforts to ensure that grades in schools are set in an equivalent manner are ineffective, a new report from the National Audit Office states.
The report shows that students who fail maths in national tests still pass with passing grades – despite the fact that the test is taken towards the end of the school year.
The background to the National Audit Office’s review is many years of reports that grades are not assigned equally. Both the Riksdag and the government have therefore taken measures. On the one hand, the Education Act was changed in 2018, so that the results of the national tests will play a greater role on the students’ grades, and on the other hand, the School Inspectorate has carried out supervision.
Not enough
However, these measures have thus not produced sufficient effect. The change in the Education Act has not clearly affected the differences between grades and results on the national exams in upper secondary school.
Project leader Krister Sund says that the legislation must become clearer.
