Manchester United won their first win of the season in the Champions League. FC Copenhagen had their place, but United woke up in the second half.
Manchester United got their first win of the season in the Champions League late on Tuesday night in front of their home crowd. In the Manchester team’s 1–0 victory over FC Copenhagen, the surprise heroes were the central defender who scored a header Harry Maguire and the Cameroonian keeper who saved the penalty kick Andre Onana.
The only goal of the evening was seen in the 72nd minute, when the much-criticized Maguire headed the ball in through the ground Christian Eriksen from cross feed.
Onana saved with his hand with a booster, at 90+8 minutes by Jordan Larsson shot penalty kick. The match ended immediately after the penalty kick with the home team celebrating.
– I’m just doing my job. We are Manchester United, we are a big club, we have to continue in the same way now, Onana was bought to United for 47 million pounds in the summer.
ManU had opened their season for the first time in their history with two consecutive UCL defeats, but Tuesday’s opening win lifted the club to within a point of second-placed Turkish side Galatasaray in Group A. United are therefore still in the battle for the top 16 after three rounds of matches.
Before the start of the match, the ManU legend who passed away on Saturday was remembered at Old Trafford Bobby Charlton. He was 86 years old when he died.
Before the match United’s Dutch coach Erik ten Hag had called on the players to be inspired by the legacy Charlton has left for the club.
– This is how it had to go, we were supposed to win this match. It was a great save from Onana and this win is dedicated to Sir Bobby and his family, Maguire commented after the game to TNT Sports.
Maguire has not been favored by the Dutch coach in the first games of the season, but injuries to United’s defense now gave Maguire a place on the screen.
– Yes, it is noticeable when the game is not on its way, but I am proud of how I have behaved these 6-12 months, Maguire said.
In the English Premier League, ManU is only eighth after nine rounds, eight points away from the top spot.
– Now I got a chance and I want to help the team back on track, Maguire summed up.
Denmark’s reigning champion FC Copenhagen did not bow down at Old Trafford, because already in the fifth minute of the match the Portuguese striker Diogo Goncalves was just inches away from the lead when he hit the post. The home crowd started to get frustrated before the break when Manchester United couldn’t create dangerous positions.
The Danish team was also responsible for the first dangerous situation of the second half, when Lukas Lerager shot into the top corner, but Onana stretched to make an important save.
A-group Bayern Munich and C-group Real Madrid are the only clean game teams after three rounds.
