On Wednesday evening, Kamala broke Harris’s silence after the election loss to Donald Trump.
In front of Howard University in Washington DC, she said her first words.
– My heart is full today. Full of gratitude, for trusting me, full of love for our country.
Several hundred cellphone cameras were raised to a sea of screaming Democrats as the vice president entered the stage in front of the entrance to his former alma mater on Wednesday night.
– My heart is full today. Full of gratitude for the trust you have given me, full of love for our country and full of determination, says Kamala Harris.
Harris thanked his “beloved Doug”
Harris had already called Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory in the presidential election and admit defeat. But she had not spoken publicly about the election loss until the speech.
Harris thanked her family, including her husband whom she called “my beloved Doug,” as well as Jill and Joe Biden, and her running mate Tim Walz and his family.
She thanked her team, the volunteers who gave “so much of themselves”, the election workers and local election officials.
– I am so proud of the race we ran and how we ran it, says Kamala Harris.
“Differentiates democracy from tyranny”
It was a large crowd, though measurably smaller than on Tuesday night, when supporters had hoped to see her give a victory speech. Some in the audience wiped away tears and appeared shocked by Donald Trump’s victory.
– I understand that you feel a lot of emotions now. The result is not what we wanted or what we voted for, but hear me when I say: When we lose an election, we accept the result. That is what separates democracy from tyranny, says Kamala Harris.
During the speech, the vice president addressed a little extra to the young voters and to Beyonce’s “Freedom” she left the stage with the final words:
– Only when it’s dark enough can you see the stars. I know many feel that we are entering a dark time but for all of us I hope that is not the case. But America if it will be, let’s look at the sky and the trillion stars of truth.
