Discover the result of the American presidential election live on the map of the United States, with the scores of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in each state…
The American elections, which were set for Tuesday, November 5, 2024 in the United States, will begin to reveal their results. The first polling stations on the East Coast closed their doors around midnight French time and the scores will rise in each state throughout the night and day of Wednesday.
The American presidential election is very different from a French presidential election. This is an indirect ballot, by which voters first vote to elect 538 electors, distributed in each American state and who will designate the future president of the United States. More than a score in percentage of votes nationally, it is the number of voters obtained by each of the candidates which will determine whether victory goes to Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. A majority of 270 voters is necessary to win the election.
The results of the American presidential election are therefore assessed according to the states won by the Democratic candidate and those won by the Republican candidate, and which will provide their electors to each of them. In the American system, obtaining the majority of votes in a state amounts to winning all of its electors, according to the principle of “winner takes all”. The number of electors depends on the population density within a state. In California, for example, there are almost 39 million people for 54 electors (or more than four electors per million inhabitants). As for states with few inhabitants, such as Alaska or Vermont, they are entitled to a minimum of three electors. This can lead to a slight overrepresentation of places where fewer than a million people reside.
Some states are already clearly won by the Democratic candidate and the Republican candidate, it is in a handful of more undecided states that this 2024 presidential election is being played out. There are 7 “Swing States” in total: Arizona, Carolina North, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Between them, they represent 93 major voters who should make the difference.

Unlike the French electoral system, Americans can vote before the election date. Established in 2004 to encourage electoral participation, early elections can take place weeks earlier, remotely or even in person. For these elections, more than 78 million people had already voted for one of the presidential candidates, or nearly one in three voters.
Added to this are postal votes, which often take longer than D-Day votes to be counted. During the 2020 presidential elections, 65.64 million ballots were sent by post, a record compared to other years. Since then, the practice has not stopped and could delay the deliberation, as in 2020 when Pennsylvania waited almost three days before giving its results.
