Harps have been increasing for a few weeks in Västerbotten’s coastal areas. The disease can be transmitted to humans and is most often spread in August and September. The cases are more than last year, writes the Västerbotten region in a press release.

Common symptoms of herpes are high fever, headache and swollen lymph nodes. Those affected must seek medical care and can be treated with antibiotics.

In order to avoid getting infected, infection control doctor Maria Marklund recommends that anyone staying out in the woods and fields wear long pants and long sleeves and use mosquito repellent.

“The most common way to become infected is via mosquito bites, but people can also become infected through direct contact with an infected animal or by inhaling dust that is contaminated with the urine or feces of sick animals,” she says in the press release.
