Starting today, the biggest sci-fi flop of the year is on Wow (formerly Sky Ticket). Immense were not the story frame or budget in the disaster blockbuster Moonfall. but also be colossal failure at the box office.

Because there the film played internationally only a hair-raising 59 million US dollars of its proud 150 million budget (via The Numbers). there is the story is downright profitably simple. The moon falls to earth. For highly mysterious reasons, of course.

But the new film by disaster guru Roland Emmerich did not meet with much approval from the critics. For some, Moonfall was “one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen.” Even the sizeable cast with Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson couldn’t do much to change that.

Moonfall depicts the descent of the disaster film. Where superheroes brawl through multiverses worth billions, earthquakes and mega-tsunamis are simply a thing of the past. A whole genre falls into the abyss together with the earth satellite.
