New Year’s Eve skiers must brace themselves for strong winds and a lot of snowfall. SMHI warns that it will be very windy both in the mountains and along the coasts.
– It looks like it will be really, really windy, says TV4 meteorologist Madeleine Westin.
The last day of the year is expected to be windy both in the mountains and along the coasts. SMHI has issued several warnings for strong winds and heavy snowfall in northern Sweden.
For Sunday, a yellow warning has been issued for strong winds and heavy snow showers in the Norrbotten and northern Västerbotten mountain regions. On Monday, the warning will be raised to an orange level for Norrbottensfjällen. There, storms and snowfall are expected during the night and morning.
– It looks like it’s going to be really, really windy. There are storm surges all the way to the coast, says TV4 meteorologist Madeleine Westin.
Don’t give out
SMHI’s warning in the mountain area means that it will be “very difficult” to orientate yourself due to reduced visibility.
– You don’t have to venture into these areas. It might be great to have an insight day, says Westin.
She also urges to anchor loose objects and to remember that the wind can carry loose objects with it.
Risk of problems in traffic
A yellow warning for very strong winds has also been issued for the Jämtlands and Västerbottensfjällen. A yellow warning for very strong wind gusts also applies to the coast and inland in northern Västerbotten and Norrbotten, with the risk of traffic problems, power outages and damage to forests.
In the Western Vindelfjällen there is also a significant avalanche danger, and a moderate risk of avalanche in the southern Lapland mountains on Monday.
In addition, a yellow warning for gale force winds applies along virtually all coasts.
– On Tuesday, it will calm down significantly in terms of the strong winds, says Westin.
Stay updated
SMHI also warns of a certain uncertainty in the weather forecast.
“Therefore, stay updated on the weather and traffic conditions in a warning situation. In SMHI’s weather app, you get notifications when warnings and messages are issued and updated,” writes SMHI on its website.
