The combined World Cup in Schonach saw a handsome final climax in the season after Norway Jarl Magnus Riiber and Austria Johannes Lamparter struggled to win the overall cup in the final race.
Riiber has already managed to escape to a safe-feeling lead on the ski leg, but Lamparter still caught up with the Norwegian who had dominated the sport in recent years. The final solution turned out to be exciting.
However, Riiber had enough power. He ran away from Lamparter at the moment of the decision.
At the same time Riiber rose Hannu Mannisen past number one in the World Cup victory race of all time. On Saturday, Riiber had already risen alongside Manninen in Schonach, but on Sunday alone he topped the statistics. For Riiber, the victory was now in the 49th World Cup. Manninen was at the highest podium 48 times in the World Cup.
Riiber now won the fourth consecutive World Cup overall. A 24-year-old Riiber was diagnosed with a corona infection when he arrived at the Beijing Olympics. Although the Norwegian has dominated the sport in recent years, the fate of the Olympics was harsh. Riiber was left without medals.
– The Olympics are forgotten. I came back after the corona and took five wins. Beating Lamparter in the final straight tastes better than anything else, Riiber moods.
Ilkka Herola again Fifth: The season was even
Ilkka Herola as on Saturday, he started 19th in the 10-kilometer cross-country ski run and rose again to fifth. Herola, who missed the race due to a corona infection, rose to 9th place in the overall cup.
Herola described in ‘s Sports Studio that, exceptionally, the jacket was not yet empty after the last World Cup of the season.
“January was so torso that it could have gone a little further,” Herola said.
He described it as uniformly thick. At the Olympics, Herola even had seams for the Olympic victory, but the wrong choice of ski for the cross-country section ruined the chances. Herola was sixth in the normal hill race.
– For the World Cup, the result level was fairly even in positions 5-6. The overall race could have done well if all the races had been open. The Olympics were not a complete success. It must have made the season a negative one overall, Herola said.
Last year, Herola got a taste of success when she won World Cup silver.
– At least there is no personal reason for this gloom, Herola says.
Petter Kukkonen was last seen as the head coach of the Finnish national team at the World Cup level. Kukkonen has been coaching the team for ten years. Kukkonen, who violently whipped himself during the Olympics, smiled to race with Schonach’s sun on Sunday afternoon.
– Sometimes things start and sometimes it ends. Now we are at the end. Rovaniemi will still have the Finnish Championships at the beginning of April. I go there and then we start to cool down, Kukkonen says.
At the end of the season, the combined national team will head to St. Anton, Austria.
– There’s downhill skiing and fun until Wednesday. Isn’t it time to have some kind of closing party? Let’s put the season and these ten years into the package and maybe think about things for the future, Kukkonen described.
