The conscripted border guards in the Norwegian village of Pasvik had only been at their post for two days when they received an unexpected mission in the middle of the night.
The alarm came about a person who appeared to have crossed the border from Russia into Norway on foot. 26-year-old Lieutenant Hanne Beverli sent out his snowmobile patrols and found the man, who turned out to be a defected Russian Wagner soldier.
– I get dressed quickly and run down the stairs. Then there was a message via the police about a possible border crossing from Russia, she says.
The man turned out to be the Russian defected Wagner soldier Andrej Medvedev, who himself knocked on a Norwegian apartment building and asked them to call the police.
After the border guards from the Pasvik company found him, he was taken on to an asylum facility in Oslo, where he is expected to testify to the Norwegian security police and war crimes investigators about his time in the Wagner group
