Hanna Lara Ek, 15, traveled with Jetline a week before the fatal accident.
Then technical problems arose during the journey and the attraction stopped abruptly.
– Then we ask the staff what is happening, they said “everything is calm” and that technicians are on their way, but the staff looked confused, she says.
In mid-June, 15-year-old Hanna Lara Ek was at Gröna Lund. When she rode the Jetline, the attraction stopped midway and passengers got stuck. After the weekend’s fatal accident, she feels scared and disappointed.
– Now that this has happened, it feels really scary. It feels irresponsible that they let us go. This is not the first time this has happened – they should have seen signs, she says.
“Sounds a bit strange, a bit crunchy”
The Jetline ride has been in operation since 1988 and is inspected every year by independent inspectors. According to Gröna Lund, it passed the inspection last spring and has also undergone internal checks afterwards.
– We would never open an attraction if we were not sure that it was safe. Our technicians go through the attraction every day and it has been inspected without any complaints, says Annika Troselius.
Hanna Lara Ek feels disappointed in Gröna Lund’s handling of security in the amusement park. According to her, there were “signs” that security should be reviewed, something she personally experienced during her visit.
– We were going to go Jetline and sat far back in the train. When it started to go, it stopped after only a few meters. The first wagon had made it a little way up the hill, she says.
When they got stuck on the track, they asked the staff what was going on, but then only got the answer that “everything is calm”.
– Don’t know what they did, but the staff looked confused and surprised. After about five minutes the train left, but it sounded a bit strange. A little crunchy. When we got back down they stopped the train before the terminus and went around with a bar and opened all the jumpers. Then they shut down the roller coaster for the rest of the day, she says.
CEO: “Understand that you put the puzzle together”
That attractions stop during travel is a signal that the safety system is working rather than the other way around, according to Gröna Lund’s CEO, Jan Eriksson.
– It is a signal that our security systems are working and nothing to worry us. Although I understand that it can feel uncomfortable for a guest who does not understand why an attraction stops, he says and continues:
– And I understand that you put the puzzle together for yourself: I experienced something yesterday – and now this happened. But we have not experienced any problem with the attraction and we would never start an attraction with the slightest suspicion of challenges or problems.
On Monday, the National Accident Commission arrived in Gröna Lund to investigate how the fatal accident could have occurred. The police are also investigating the incident through a preliminary investigation regarding causing danger to another, causing the death of another and causing bodily harm.
