Handball: The big club’s crisis move – lowers the players’ salaries

Sporting is going well.

Last year, Vipers won their third consecutive Champions League title and the team tops the Norwegian league.

But aside from the pitch, the Norwegian big club is bleeding financially.

SVT Sport has previously written about how the players have had to act as telemarketers to bring in money and try to save the club from bankruptcy.

Now the club has had to take new measures.

In a press release, the club announces that the players have accepted a pay cut to help the club’s financial situation. The coaching team has also had their salaries reduced and the club’s administrative department has been partially laid off.

– In a way, it feels good to be able to help, but it is sad that we are in this situation, says Jamina Roberts to SVT Sport.

“Is enough”

The Swedish national team star cannot go into detail about exactly how much salary she needs to give up.

– It is enough to help the club. Then everyone has their expenses and none of us can take another job. We have agreed on a percentage so that people can manage to live, she says.

How do you see the club’s future?

– We just hope that the club survives. That is the goal and we are going down in salary so that the club can exist next season. If we do that, I look at it brightly. Vipers are a good team and for next season they say it could look better financially if we get through this.
