Handball: Sweden ready for the Olympics – after a big defeat against Great Britain

No, it was never exciting when Sweden was pitted against Great Britain in the Olympic qualifiers. Already at the break, the yellow-clad led with 21 goals (27-6). By then, Nathalie Hagman had already achieved an impressive eleven hits.

In others, however, she, and a couple of other stars, got to rest. But that did not stop Sweden’s target production. Instead, they continued to pour on and took the second half with 25 goals to two. That made the final score 52-8.

Confederation captain Tomas Axnér is thus right in his statement before the match, when he said that he can go home from Hungary or become a monk if Sweden lost the qualifying match against Great Britain, which would not actually have been in the qualification.

The defeat also means that Sweden has secured a place at the Olympics in Paris in 2024.

– It feels fantastic. The goal of the weekend was to get to the Olympics. We probably knew that before this match as well, but we finish in a good way, says Hagman to SVT Sport.
