Magnus Wislander is one of Swedish handball’s all-time greats.
But alongside the love for handball, the heart also beats for a favorite football team.
– I started keeping them already when they were in division one. They played very funny football, the “Slangen” has admitted.
Already in the 80s, he made a big impact in Redbergslid and scored goals for the Gothenburg team. Magnus Wislander scored 658 goals in 164 matches and won four SM gold with the classic team before he left Sweden to move abroad.

In 1990, the big move went from the hometown of Gothenburg to handball-crazy Kiel in Germany. Where Wislander would continue to collect points and turn into one of handball’s absolute greatest of all time.

The tall Swede won a whopping 13 titles with big club THW Kiel and scored an unparalleled 1,371 goals in 369 games from his position as a centre-six. Wislander would also become the “Slangen” with the entire Swedish people for his incredible efforts in the Swedish national team during the period of greatness with the “Bengan Boys”.

His favorite team
With Wislander in the team, Sweden won three straight Olympic silvers, double World Cup gold, double World Cup silver, double World Cup bronze and a total of four European Championship golds. And Slangen scored as much as 1,185 goals in 384 international matches in the blue and yellow shirt, which is the most goals and the most matches in Swedish handball history.

Magnus Wislander was also named the world’s best handball player in 1990 and received the really heavy award as the very best handball player of the 20th century. But alongside the love for handball, the heart also beats warmly for a football team.

Wislander reveals in an old interview with Aftonbladet that his favorite team is IFK Göteborg. Which does not sound entirely improbable for a native of Gothenburg, and the loyalty to “Blåvitt” is strong.
– I started keeping them already when they were in division one. They played very funny football and then it has continued over the years, like when Torbjörn Nilsson played and when they won the UEFA Cup and so on, he says in the interview.
