Handball: Denmark took Olympic gold in handball – now Mikkel Hansen retires

In April, Mikkel Hansen announced that he was putting his shoes on the shelf after the Olympics.

The 36-year-old had then led the Danish national team to an Olympic gold, three World Cup gold and double European Championship gold.

Today he crowned his career with another Olympic gold.

Hansen, who was named the world’s best player in 2011, 2015 and 2018, scored twice as Denmark pulverized Germany in front of a packed Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Denmark led 21–12 at the break and enjoyed a comfortable ride in the second half. The Olympic gold is the Danes’ second, after beating France in the final in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
