The background, as DN has previously told about, is that Hammarby Rowing Association was formed in 1889, but the association’s members after a while also started doing athletics and in 1897 the decision was made to transform the association into a multi-section association.
1897 has been established as Hammarby’s year of birth, but Hammarby residents who have researched the matter believe that it is 1889 that applies.
– It is clear, 100 percent certain that what happens in 1897 is a name change from Hammarby rowing association to Hammarby IF, not that a new association is formed, said Gabriel Gemmel who was the driving force in the matter to DN before the vote.
At the annual meeting on On Monday evening, 17 of the 20 Hammarby associations participated, and 14 of them voted in favor of the proposal to change the statutes so that it says that Hammarby IF has its real origin in 1889, announces the association in a statement.
The new year means that Hammarby ends up two years ahead of Stockholm rivals AIK and Djurgården, the so-called twin clubs, both of which were formed in 1891.
