After Max Verstappen took home the British Grand Prix on Sunday, Red Bull has won all ten races of the season.
The other stables thus have to fight for the places behind and at Silverstone it was an unexpected name that entered the game.
McLaren have had a tough first half but were suddenly incredibly quick. It ended in second place for Lando Norris while Oscar Piastri was fourth.
In between landed Hamilton who was impressed by the competitor.
“That car is a space rocket,” he could be heard saying over the com radio.
“A lot of work to do”
The seven-time world champion is supported by team boss Toto Wolff.
— When the safety car came in, I thought we were going to eat them. But we could see how strong their car was. With that efficiency and top speed, we had no chance of passing. It was a surprise, says the Austrian Sky Sports.
Now Hamilton wants to see similar improvement from Mercedes.
— There have been a lot of ups and downs this year. We have a lot of work to do.
— I think I know exactly what we need to do and we need to have serious conversations about what we should do in the future. The McLaren cars are a testament to the path they chose and it’s impressive how fast they were, says the 38-year-old.
No retirement plans yet
Hamilton’s own future has been the subject of speculation as he is on an expiring contract. Before the race, however, he announced that the discussions regarding an extension are going well and that he does not intend to stop quite yet.
— I feel that I have at least another five years in me. But we’ll see.
Next up is the Hungarian grand prix, where Hamilton finished second in his Mercedes last year.
