Haller with the first goal after the cancer absence

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The Ivorian national team player was diagnosed with testicular cancer in the summer of 2022 and has since undergone two operations and had to undergo four chemotherapy treatments.

Haller did not know if he would be able to play football again, but back he came and on Saturday the 28-year-old scored his first goal, in his fourth game since his return, for Dortmund.

The striker headed in the 3-1 goal in the Bundesliga meeting with Freiburg and sent the home crowd into bliss.

Haller also looked emotional before pointing to his shoe, which was emblazoned with the words “fuck cancer”, something the cameraman caught.

Extra special this evening was that Haller’s achievement came on World Cancer Day, the purpose of which is to increase knowledge about cancer, show support and encourage personal commitment.

Haller was signed to Dortmund from Ajax last summer to replace Erling Braut Haaland who signed for Manchester City.

Dortmund finally won Saturday’s game by a whopping 5-1 and is third in the table, two points behind Union Berlin at the top.
