Håkan Södergren disses both Peter Forsberg and Nicklas Lidström

He is one of Swedish hockey’s big profiles.
Now Håkan Södergren gets the chance to name Swedish hockey’s greatest ever.
Then he opts out of both Peter Forsberg and Nicklas Lidström.

Nowadays, most people characterize Håkan Södergren like a really nice talking mill on TV. For many years he has been an expert commentator in the TV box and above all at Viasat and Viaplay but basically he is a very skilled hockey player.

Södergren’s career

The left forward played for Djurgården pretty much his entire career, except for one final season in Huddinge, and became a true club icon. Södergren won four SM gold with Dif and represented Tre Kronor in a total of 162 international matches

Håkan Södergren won both WC gold in 1987 and took double Olympic bronze in 1984 and 1988, but it is another memory that he highlights as his very best from his career.
– WC in Moscow, 1986. We took silver with an injury-hit team that no one thought would even make it to the playoffs. We pressured the Soviet Union. It was a nice group, he says in an old interview with Sportmagasinet from 2006.

Choose the best

In the same newspaper, the 100 best hockey players of all time in Sweden have been named and Södergren has made it to the very last place as number 100.
– Always nice to be recognized. Place 100 I’m not unhappy with. I belong to the generation between the old and the new; I know how damn good guys like Tord Lundström and the others were in their time. Few are aware of it today. It feels a bit like I belong to the “team of five” in Tre Kronor, he says in the interview.

Then the hockey legend gets the chance to name Sweden’s very best player in hockey history. Then he opts out of both Peter Forsberg and Nicklas Lidström for another blue-yellow giant.
– Er… Tumba or Sterner, or Sundin or Forsberg. If I have to choose, I’ll take… Mats Sundin. He has an ability to constantly play at a very high level, not least in Tre Kronor where he was actually better than in Toronto. That says a lot about his attitude, says Södergren in the newspaper.
