Håkan Loob hits back at criticism about why no one has beaten his incredible goal record in the NHL: “It’s surprising”

In 1988, Håkan Loob did the incredible with 50 goals in the NHL.
No other Swede has managed to repeat it since then.
Now the Swedish icon is hitting back against criticism over his goal record.

He was something very special on the ice, the good one Håkan Loob. The skilled hockey player from Gotland would become one of Sweden’s greatest of all time.

Loob’s goal record

To this day, he holds several records that continue to stand strong in the SHL so many, many years later. Loob also has a very difficult goal record in the NHL that no Swede has managed to beat, either Peter Forsberg or Mats Sundin.

In the 1987-88 season, Håkan Loob scored a total of 50 goals in the NHL for the Calgary Flames, and it is a dream limit that has proven to be impossible for all Swedes to reach in North America. And then many have tried.

Forsberg chased

This year it was Philip Forsberg who rose to the challenge and had the scoring record in his sights but only managed to reach 48 goals in the regular season for the Nashville Predators. Therefore, “Looben” is still the Swede who has scored the most goals during an NHL season.
– Yes, it is both surprising but also great fun of course. Because it’s mentioned every year when it’s not played, so it’s just nice, he tells Radiosporten.

Håkan Loob also hits back at the criticism that it must have been easier to score goals in the past compared to now and that is why his goal record can last so long.
– It is possible to score goals today also because the material you use, clubs etc., is much better than what we had in my time. So it will certainly be fought, says the legend in the interview.

For 36 long years, the goal record has now stood. It remains to be seen how many years it will continue to be Håkan Loob who scored the most goals as a Swede during an NHL season.
