The Swedish Football Association’s search for Janne Andersson’s successor continues since Olof Mellberg has turned it down. Another name mentioned as a candidate is Håkan Ericson, who led Sweden’s U21 national team to European Championship gold in 2015.
– I am very proud to be one of the people mentioned in Sweden’s most important and exciting coaching job, says Ericson.
The 63-year-old is currently the national team captain for the Faroe Islands and last year extended his contract until December 2025.
“Full focus”
– I can say this. That if the football association in Sweden were interested, the first step would be to contact the Faroese association, and I have not received any such signals.
Would you be interested if the Swedish Football Association got in touch?
– It is not possible to comment. I have a contract now with another national team and am fully focused on it. I don’t go thinking “what if I was there” or “what would I do if I got this and that question”. Now we are going to make a good Nations League in 2024 and that is my full focus.
Ericsons was included as a possible confederation captain’s name as early as 2015.
– I have been available for quite a long time to have a discussion with in such cases. Above all, it was well after the gold in 2015. But then nothing came of it, so I’ve closed the door mentally since then. If it didn’t happen then, I don’t think it will happen again, but you never know for sure.
