Almost every other hairdresser business owner would have to hire a new hairdresser in the coming year, but it is not easy these days. According to the industry organization Frisörföretagarna, there is a great shortage of hairdressers. This can lead to more expensive haircuts.
A few years ago it was – if not a battle with the knife, then at least a battle with the scissors to get to work here at Victor Noblesse in Gothenburg. But lately, applications here have become fewer, Dani Abunar, who is a co-owner of the salon, has noticed.
– We feel that it has dropped in the last two years, a fairly clear drop. It is difficult to find employable hairdressers who do not have a license, they do not have the skills to work and often there is also a lack of language, unfortunately.
Scarcity threatens
By 2030, every fourth hairdresser will have reached retirement age and new hairdressers are not graduating at the same rate, according to Staffan Westman, CEO of the branch organization Frisörföretagarna.
Many start their education, but dropouts are high both during the education and later, after a few years in professional life.
– You can turn it around and say that the hairdressers who exist today will have even more to do and will be able to charge even more. But for the industry’s survival, we would very much like more people to choose the profession so that the existing companies can continue to grow.
At Victor Noblesse, the situation is solved by partially training the hairdressers themselves.
– It will be more work for us, but we do it so that they reach a level that is acceptable to us.
