A French couple is sentenced to a year’s probation for hoarding animals. The couple had 159 cats and seven dogs indoors in their 80 square meter apartment in Nice.
The 68-year-old woman and 52-year-old man are also sentenced to pay the equivalent of roughly 1.7 million kroner, 150,000 euros, for animal welfare crimes and receive a permanent ban on having pets.
Towards the end of Wednesday’s trial, the woman, the owner of the animals, filed to appeal the verdict.
– Who wouldn’t appeal an injustice like this? It’s like telling a woman not to have more children, she said.
It was last year that the police in Nice began to investigate the couple, who had previously been investigated for similar crimes, after neighbors raised the alarm. Police then found neglected animals in all rooms of the apartment on the French Riviera. In a bathroom, investigators found the dead bodies of at least two cats and two puppies.
