The municipality of Härjedalen has been hit by an extensive IT attack. The hackers have made demands on the municipality – which will not meet them, local media reports.

– The municipality will not agree to the demands, says municipal manager Gunnel Gyllander to Länstidningen Östersund.

She does not want to go into more detail about what the demands are or where they come from.

The IT attack was discovered by the home service on the night of 23 December. Since then, the municipality’s IT system and computers have been disabled.

Neither e-services nor e-mail work and the municipality cannot pay and receive invoices. The salary systems are also gone and the municipality’s switchboard is in trouble. All work must be done with paper and pencil.

The municipality’s own technicians, together with external consultants, have been working pretty much around the clock, but there is no forecast for when the problems will be fixed.

– When we look at experiences from Kalix municipality, it will take several months before all systems are up and running again, says Gunnel Gyllander.

The municipality of Kalix was exposed to a cyber attack in December 2021. In July of the same year, Coop was hit by an extensive so-called ransomware attack. At the end of November this year, the Church of Sweden’s IT system was down for several weeks after an IT attack.
