Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto states that Turkey has now admitted that Finland is experiencing the requirements of the tripartite agreement between Finland, Sweden and Turkey.

Finland still wants to join NATO together with Sweden, but more and more leaders are open to Finland joining first.

According to Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, Turkey has announced that Finland fulfills the requirements set in the tripartite agreement in Madrid, reports Howl.

– Turkey has said that the things agreed upon in the tripartite agreement last summer have been fulfilled for Finland, says Haavisto during the ongoing security conference in Munich, according to EPN.

Haavisto says he discussed with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu last week. In the discussions, Turkey has also brought forward that the negotiations with Sweden must continue.

However, Haavisto emphasizes that Finland has not been informed of Turkey’s final decision regarding the ratification of the country’s application for NATO membership.

Can join without Sweden

Turkey has previously indicated that it may only ratify Finland’s NATO application. And more people are now open to Finland joining before Sweden.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg participates in talks during the security meeting in Munich together with the President and Prime Minister of Finland.

He states that NATO’s position is still that the countries should enter at the same time, but at the same time says:

– But if only one is ratified, then Finland will join, he says.

President Sauli Niinistö is a little more vague in his wording, but his conclusion is similar.

– We applied jointly with Sweden, says Niinistö, but adds that the matter is now in Turkey’s hands.
