Manchester City, reigning English league champions, hosted newcomers Burnley in the Premier League opener.

Smolk in the City cup, however, was that the midfield star Kevin de Bruyne had to leave the field with an injury after only 22 minutes.
In Burnley, Swedish centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal sat on the bench for the entire match.
