When the plans to build a steel mill in Boden were presented, the idea was that the ore would come from LKAB’s mines in Norrbotten. But this suggests that the parties disagree about the capacity on the Malmbanan.
Rio Tinto in Canada is to ship raw materials from its facilities on Labrador Island to Luleå. The same amount of ore is imported from Vale’s operations in northeastern Brazil. Approximately three million tons of iron ore will be needed for the steel mill’s needs in the first year.
Vale’s and Rio Tinto’s environmental ambitions are important to H2GS.
“These companies conduct a lot of technology development, both in terms of pellets and different types of production processes to reduce their emissions and energy needs,” says CEO Henrik Henriksson to Di.
H2GS plans to start production in earnest in 2026.
