Gymnastics: Sweden finished eighth in the historic EC final: “So very strong”

See Nathalie Westlund’s performance on bars during the EC final.

For the first time ever, Sweden participated in the team final at the EC in artistic gymnastics.

Nathalie Westlund, Maya Ståhl and Jennifer Williams started in singles against Germany. There, the latter stood out and was awarded 12,900. That, in combination with good results also in jumping, gave Sweden a good start at the EC final.

– Wow, so very strongly done, commented SVT’s expert Veronica Wagner.

Barr was next in line and Sweden was then in seventh place (74.732), just behind Spain. Nathalie Westlund, who finished sixth in the individual bars final yesterday, showed her class at once, amassing 13.833.

– It’s better than yesterday, that’s a pers! What a girl, Wagner exclaimed.

Fall on the bar: “Ugh, how boring!”

The rest of the team delivered and Sweden was still seventh when it was time for the bar where the Swedish hope rested in the hands of Jennifer Williams, Nathalie Westlund and Elina Gravin.

There it was more difficult for the Swedish team when both Williams and Westlund fell.

– Ugh, how boring. It is so unfair, commented AnnaMaria Fredholm.

Despite the falls, it was still a satisfied Swedish team after the competition.

– It’s great that we are top eight in Europe. We have fought hard for this for years. We are part of history, says Tonya Paulsson in SVT’s broadcast.

The home nation Italy, led by superstar Manila Esposito, was the favorite and the Italians kept up the pressure. The team secured the gold ahead of Great Britain and France.
