Anders Thornberg believes that he acted correctly regarding the investigation into Mats Löfving – and refers, among other things, to grief work as an answer to why he ducked questions. Crime professor Leif GW Persson saw the words of the national police chief. – He subjected Löfving to a public execution, he says. Mats Löfving was found dead in his home on February 22. The death notice came hours after the investigation showed that Löfving had been involved in several decisions in connection with Linda Staaf’s time as head of intelligence at Noa – something that was presented during a press conference. National Police Chief Anders Thornberg has been tight-lipped about his colleague’s death, something that has drawn much criticism. On Tuesday, Thornberg broke the silence in an interview with TV4 Nyheterna. – We have acted based on the Police Authority and as far as we can judge, we have acted in the way that we could and should do. My assessment is that we did what was reasonable and that we could not have acted in any other way, said the national police chief. When asked why Thornberg ducked questions, he refers partly to an internal investigation that will clarify whether mistakes have been made, partly to a mourning process within the authority. – We have had grief in the police authority. There are relatives who have been hurt and we ourselves in the Police Authority have taken this very hard, said Thornberg. GW’s sharp criticism: “Almost distasteful” Crime professor Leif GW Persson is critical of Thornberg’s answer, mainly to his words about the grief. – He did not want to answer any of these sensitive questions. In Löfving’s case depending on the fact that he was fully occupied with grief work and he could have avoided that because he actually exposed Löfving to a public execution, without legal basis, says Leif GW in Nyhetsmorgon. – He could have spared him that bit. It almost becomes very unsavory actually, continues GW. It is not only the handling of Löfving and the investigation against him that Leif GW is critical of. The criminology professor does not have confidence in the national police chief in general, who he believes will not stay for long. – This has of course damaged trust in the Police Authority, but the interesting thing for me is that the operation does not actually work, you simply cannot solve any crimes, says GW and continues: – In Sweden, we have, per police employee, the world’s most expensive police and we have performance numbers that are deplorable. And this needs to be addressed. Anders Thornberg unfortunately did not live up to expectations. National Police Chief Anders Thornberg declines to comment on the latest criticism.
