Gunmen kill six police officers and a priest in Russias

Gunmen attacked a synagogue and churches in southern Russia’s Dagestan on Sunday and killed an Orthodox priest and six police officers, reports news agency Reuters.

In addition, 12 police officers have been injured in the attacks, the country’s Ministry of the Interior says.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, a synagogue and an Orthodox church were set on fire in connection with the attacks. The attacks took place in Dagestan’s largest city, Makhachkala, and about 125 kilometers away in Derbent.

Four armed attackers have been shot, Russian police say. The attackers have not yet been identified.

Dagestan has been the target of Islamic attacks before. The region’s population has a Muslim majority. Jews have lived in Derbent for centuries.
